Andhra Pradesh: Vadde Community Members Rescued from Bonded Labour at Illegal Stone Unit

In a significant operation, authorities in Andhra Pradesh have successfully rescued several individuals from the Vadde community who were subjected to bonded labour at an unauthorised stone-cutting facility in Anantapur district. These individuals, burdened by unmanageable debt, were reportedly forced to work under exploitative conditions for over a year before their liberation.

The victims, primarily from impoverished backgrounds within the Vadde community, found themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of debt, leading to their forced servitude. They were compelled to perform arduous manual labour at the illegal unit, with their meagre earnings insufficient to clear their original loans, effectively binding them to a life of toil. The adverse living and working conditions at the site further exacerbated their plight, stripping them of basic human dignity and freedom.

The rescue operation was initiated following intelligence reports and persistent efforts by local administration and labour department officials. A joint team descended upon the stone-cutting unit, confirming the presence of bonded labourers and the illegal nature of the operation. The prompt intervention led to the immediate release of the affected individuals, marking a crucial step towards their rehabilitation.

Following their rescue, arrangements are being made for the freed labourers to receive necessary support and rehabilitation, as mandated by law. Authorities have also launched an investigation into the owners and operators of the illegal stone unit, with legal action expected against those found responsible for perpetrating this form of modern slavery.
