BJP-Led States to Implement UCC Before 2029, Confirms Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that BJP-ruled state governments in 21 states will bring in the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led governments in 21 states across India are set to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. This statement signals a significant push by the party to implement a key electoral promise at the state level.
The Uniform Civil Code is a proposed legislation that seeks to replace the existing personal laws of various religions with a single, common set of laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and succession. Rooted in Article 44 of the Indian Constitution's Directive Principles of State Policy, the UCC aims to ensure uniformity and equality for all citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliation.
For decades, the implementation of the UCC has been a core ideological agenda for the BJP. Proponents argue that it promotes gender justice, national integration, and secularism by ending discriminatory practices within personal laws. Conversely, critics often raise concerns about potential infringements on religious freedom and the diverse cultural practices of different communities in India.
Mr. Shah's declaration suggests a multi-state approach to its enactment. Uttarakhand has already passed a UCC bill, becoming the first state to do so. Other BJP-ruled states, including Gujarat and Assam, have also initiated processes or expressed intentions to explore its implementation, forming expert committees to study the matter. This coordinated effort underscores the party's commitment to the UCC ahead of the next general elections.
