Australian scientists have developed an innovative, reusable magnetic material designed to effectively eliminate microplastic particles from water sources. This breakthrough represents a significant step forward in addressing the global challenge of water pollution, particularly in countries like India grappling with extensive contamination.
The newly engineered material functions as a magnetic powder that efficiently captures minute plastic fragments, along with heavy metals, from water. A key advantage of this technology is its reusability; once the magnetic powder has collected the pollutants, it can be easily recovered from the water using strong magnets. This process not only simplifies waste management but also significantly reduces operational costs associated with traditional water treatment methods.
Trials have demonstrated remarkable efficacy, with the material capable of removing more than 95 per cent of microplastics from contaminated water. Furthermore, researchers indicate its potential extends to tackling other persistent harmful substances, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as 'forever chemicals', which pose serious environmental and health risks.
