Hyundai India Pivots to Mass-Market EVs with New Affordable SUV Launch
Hyundai Motor India is set to launch its first mass-market electric SUV this fiscal year, targeting the sub-₹15 lakh segment with expanded charging and localisation efforts.

Hyundai Gears Up for Mass-Market EV Offensive in India
Hyundai Motor India is making a strategic shift, preparing to enter the mass-market electric vehicle (EV) segment. The company plans to introduce its first affordable electric SUV within the current fiscal year, aiming to capture a significant share of the rapidly growing sub-₹15 lakh EV market in the country. This move marks a notable departure from its earlier focus on premium EV offerings.
To support this ambitious launch, Hyundai is actively laying the groundwork by significantly expanding its charging infrastructure across India. Concurrently, the automaker is intensifying efforts in component localisation, a crucial step to manage costs, enhance supply chain resilience, and ultimately make its upcoming EV more competitive and accessible to a wider Indian consumer base.
Previously, Hyundai's EV portfolio in India, notably with models like the Kona Electric and IONIQ 5, primarily catered to the higher-end of the market. The upcoming SUV's entry into the sub-₹15 lakh category is expected to intensify competition and accelerate EV adoption, positioning Hyundai against established players and new entrants in the affordable electric mobility space.
The launch is strategically timed to precede the implementation of the stricter Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) III emission norms, which will further incentivise manufacturers to incorporate more fuel-efficient and electric models into their fleets. This proactive approach underscores Hyundai's commitment to aligning with India's evolving automotive regulations and environmental goals.
This expansion into the mass-market segment is anticipated to significantly bolster Hyundai's overall market presence in India and contribute to the nation's broader electric mobility transition. It signals a robust commitment from one of the country's leading automakers to democratise EV ownership.
