Kerala's preparedness for rain-induced natural calamities is drawing significant concern, with a growing emphasis on the need for robust, long-term mitigation strategies. The state, prone to heavy monsoon downpours and associated events like floods and landslides, is urged by experts to move beyond reactive responses and embrace a proactive approach to disaster management.
Recently, the state's Chief Minister attributed delays in receiving timely weather forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as a hindrance to effective disaster preparedness. This statement underscored a perceived reliance on immediate alerts for initiating safety measures and relief operations across vulnerable regions.
However, a different perspective is emerging from disaster management specialists and meteorologists. They contend that the IMD has already provided comprehensive historical data that should inform the state's planning. This extensive dataset, spanning 125 years from 1901 to 2025 and covering 110 weather stations across Kerala, offers a detailed understanding of rainfall patterns and their impact.
Experts highlight that this rich historical information has clearly identified Kerala's most susceptible areas during the monsoon season. They argue that the state government possesses sufficient scientific insight to formulate and implement sustained preparedness measures, rather than awaiting real-time weather alerts before activating response protocols. The call is for a paradigm shift, utilising existing knowledge to build resilience and safeguard communities from recurring weather-related challenges.
