Maharashtra Braces for Widespread Drought Declaration by Month-End
Maharashtra's Cooperation Minister indicates a 100% drought declaration is imminent, citing an unprecedented dry spell and outlining relief measures.

Maharashtra is on the verge of declaring a 100% drought across the state by the end of the current month, according to remarks made by Cooperation Minister Babasaheb Patil. The Minister highlighted the unprecedented severity of the dry spell plaguing the region, signalling a challenging period ahead for its residents, particularly farmers.
Minister Patil underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that such an extreme dry spell has not been witnessed before. This widespread drought declaration would signify a critical agricultural and water scarcity crisis impacting numerous districts and millions of livelihoods across the state. The announcement is anticipated to formalise the dire conditions already being experienced on the ground.
In response to the escalating crisis, the state government has already initiated a series of relief measures aimed at alleviating the immediate burden on affected communities. These steps include a waiver of fees for students from drought-hit areas, a significant relief for families struggling with economic strain. Additionally, the government has announced waivers for electricity bills, providing much-needed respite to households and agricultural consumers.
Furthermore, to address the acute shortage of potable water, authorities have begun deploying water tankers to various affected villages and towns. These measures are part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impact of the impending drought, with further interventions expected once the formal declaration is made. The administration is reportedly preparing for extensive support programmes to aid farmers and rural populations through this difficult period.
