Massive Pre-Dinosaur Amphibian Fossil Unearthed by Volunteer Team

An extraordinary discovery has shed new light on Earth’s ancient past, predating the era when dinosaurs dominated the planet. Scientists, aided by a massive public volunteer effort, are currently working to meticulously clean and preserve a colossal 1,300-kilogram fossilised skeleton of a Mastodonsaurus, a formidable amphibian predator that roamed the Earth approximately 240 million years ago.

This remarkable specimen offers a rare glimpse into the Triassic period, a time long before the emergence of iconic dinosaurs. The Mastodonsaurus, weighing nearly 2,865 pounds, was a fearsome creature, inhabiting prehistoric waterways as a top predator. Its sheer size and the completeness of the fossil are expected to provide invaluable insights into the ecosystems and biodiversity of that distant epoch.

The intricate cleaning process is being undertaken by a dedicated team of over 2,000 public volunteers. Armed with specialised tools and utilising ultraviolet light, these individuals are carefully removing millennia of sediment and rock from the ancient bones. This collaborative approach underscores a significant community engagement in scientific research, allowing ordinary citizens to directly contribute to uncovering Earth's natural history.

Researchers believe that the detailed study of this Mastodonsaurus skeleton will enhance our understanding of amphibian evolution and the environmental conditions that existed millions of years ago. Once the extensive cleaning and preservation work is complete, the spectacular skeleton is anticipated to be ready for public display by October or November.
