Sonam Wangchuk Urges PM for Sensitivity Amidst Ladakh Protest, Affirms Apolitical Stance
Educationist Sonam Wangchuk has called on the Prime Minister to be "sensitive, not rigid" regarding the ongoing protest in Ladakh, emphasising its apolitical nature.

Prominent educationist and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to adopt a "sensitive" rather than "rigid" approach towards the ongoing protest in Ladakh. Wangchuk, who has been at the forefront of the agitation, also asserted that the platform for their demands carries "no political colour," underscoring its focus on the region's specific needs.
Speaking about the movement, Wangchuk reiterated that the core objective of the protest is to secure constitutional safeguards for Ladakh's unique environment and indigenous culture. He emphasised that the demands are rooted in the welfare of the local population and the ecological preservation of the sensitive Himalayan region, rather than any partisan agenda. The activist has been advocating for the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and for statehood, key issues that have garnered significant local support.
Wangchuk’s remarks highlight a desire for constructive dialogue and understanding from the central government. By urging sensitivity, he implied a need for the Prime Minister and the administration to listen intently to the concerns of the Ladakhi people and respond with flexibility, rather than maintaining a firm, unyielding stance on the issues at hand.
The protest, which has seen considerable participation from various sections of Ladakhi society, seeks to protect the region's land, resources, and distinct identity following its reorganisation as a Union Territory. Activists and local leaders believe that Sixth Schedule status is crucial to safeguard these aspects from potential environmental degradation and demographic shifts.
