Sunil Tatkare Rekindles NCP Merger Buzz, Puts Onus on Sharad Pawar

A prominent leader from the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sunil Tatkare, has reignited speculation regarding a potential merger between the two splintered groups of the party. Tatkare's recent remarks suggest that the final decision and initiative for such a reunification now rests with party patriarch Sharad Pawar, indicating a deliberate shift of responsibility onto the veteran leader.

The NCP experienced a significant split last year when a faction, led by Ajit Pawar, aligned with the ruling Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction). The other faction, headed by Sharad Pawar, chose to remain in the opposition, forming a crucial component of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the broader INDIA bloc.

Tatkare, a Member of Parliament and a key figure in the Ajit Pawar camp, reportedly emphasised the importance of party unity for its future trajectory. While not detailing specific proposals, his statement strongly implied that any move towards reconciliation or a merger would need to originate from Sharad Pawar's side, effectively placing the 'ball in his court'.

These comments come amidst ongoing political realignments in Maharashtra, particularly with the Lok Sabha elections concluded and the state assembly polls on the horizon. The split has significantly impacted the NCP's traditional vote base and its influence in state politics. A potential merger, if it were to materialise, would undoubtedly reshape the political landscape, affecting both the ruling alliance and the opposition.

While Sharad Pawar's faction has largely maintained a stance against rejoining the Ajit Pawar group, Tatkare's public statement could be seen as an attempt to pressure the senior Pawar or test the waters for future negotiations. The implications for the INDIA bloc and the Mahayuti alliance would be considerable, making any development on this front keenly watched by political observers across the country.
