Supreme Court Directs FSSAI on Specifics of Food Warning Labels

India's Supreme Court has issued a directive to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), demanding comprehensive details regarding the design and implementation of food warning labels on packaged products. The apex court's focus is on ensuring clarity and effectiveness of these labels, particularly concerning the communication of health risks associated with certain food items.

During recent proceedings, the bench specifically sought precise information from the FSSAI on thirteen distinct aspects of these warning labels. This includes outlining the exact shape, size, colour scheme, and strategic placement of such labels on food packaging. The food regulator has been given a strict deadline of ten days to furnish these detailed responses to the court.

A significant emphasis of the court's inquiry is on protecting children from the adverse effects of unhealthy food choices. The Supreme Court underscored the critical importance of effectively communicating the potential risks associated with "junk food" to younger demographics, ensuring that warning messages are easily understood and prominently displayed.

While acknowledging that the FSSAI has initiated steps towards developing a robust labelling system, the court indicated a need for greater specificity and clarity in the proposed guidelines. This directive aims to ensure that the regulatory framework for food labelling is unambiguous, enforceable, and ultimately serves the broader public health objective of promoting informed consumer choices across the nation.
