Wangchuk's Wife Contests Delhi HC Ruling on Medical Transfer, Plans New Petition

Gitanjali Angmo, wife of renowned Leh-based educationist and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has voiced her disagreement with the Delhi High Court's recent refusal to grant interim relief concerning his requested medical transfer. She indicated that the public interest litigation (PIL) filed on his behalf was, in her view, misunderstood by the court.

Ms. Angmo specifically stated that the plea did not necessitate government intervention, suggesting that the court's interpretation of their request for a hospital transfer for Mr. Wangchuk was incorrect. Her remarks come amidst ongoing concerns for Mr. Wangchuk's health, particularly following his prolonged hunger strike advocating for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule.

Undeterred by the recent setback, Ms. Angmo confirmed plans to submit a fresh petition. She announced that a new legal filing would be made on July 20, reiterating their commitment to securing appropriate medical attention and transfer for the activist.

The Delhi High Court had previously declined to issue an interim order for Mr. Wangchuk's transfer to a specialised medical facility. The court's decision was reportedly based on observations that his current medical care was adequate and that there were no immediate grounds warranting an expedited transfer as sought in the initial petition.

Sonam Wangchuk has been at the forefront of a movement demanding greater protections for Ladakh's fragile ecosystem and indigenous culture. His activism, including a series of hunger strikes, has drawn significant national attention to the region's environmental and political concerns, making his health a matter of public interest.
