Weather Alert: West Bengal on High Alert for Monsoon Fury

West Bengal is poised to experience a significant spell of adverse weather conditions, with heavy rains and strong, squally winds forecast to hit the region from September 22. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert, indicating that the inclement weather is expected to persist until September 26, urging residents to prepare for potential disruptions.

The anticipated weather phenomenon originates from a low-pressure area currently situated over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the adjacent north Andaman Sea. Meteorological projections suggest this system is highly likely to strengthen into a depression by Monday, further intensifying its impact as it moves.

Coastal districts and southern parts of West Bengal are particularly vulnerable to the forecast conditions. Authorities are advising residents to take necessary precautions, as the heavy downpours could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, and the strong winds may cause damage to property and disrupt power supply and transportation networks.

In light of the developing situation, fishermen have been strongly cautioned against venturing into the Bay of Bengal during this period. Emergency services are being put on standby to manage any exigencies arising from the severe weather, ensuring a coordinated response to protect lives and minimise damage across the state.
