Cabinet Clears Bill for National Tribunal Commission, Aims to Streamline Judicial System
The Union Cabinet has approved the Tribunals Reforms Bill, paving the way for an independent National Tribunal Commission to oversee appointments and functioning of various tribunals.

The Union Cabinet has given its nod to the Tribunals Reforms Bill, a significant legislative move aimed at overhauling the administration of specialised adjudicatory bodies across India. This bill proposes the establishment of a National Tribunal Commission, an independent entity designed to streamline the appointment process and ensure the efficient functioning of various tribunals.
The creation of such a commission comes in response to earlier directives from the Supreme Court of India. The apex court had previously highlighted concerns regarding the operational efficacy and accountability of tribunals, often noting that they were becoming a significant burden on the conventional judiciary rather than serving as expeditious alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
Upon its formation, the National Tribunal Commission is expected to play a pivotal role in centralising the administrative control and oversight of approximately sixteen existing tribunals. Its mandate will encompass crucial aspects such as the selection of members, their terms of service, and ensuring uniformity in the operational standards of these judicial and quasi-judicial bodies. This is anticipated to foster greater independence and professionalism within the tribunal system.
With the Cabinet's approval, the Tribunals Reforms Bill is now slated for introduction in the Lok Sabha in the upcoming parliamentary session. Its passage is expected to bring about a much-needed structural reform, aiming to enhance judicial efficiency, reduce pendency in courts, and provide quicker justice delivery through a well-regulated tribunal framework.
