EAM Jaishankar Launches India’s Campaign for 2028-29 UN Security Council Term

India Eyes Another Stint on Global Stage

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has formally inaugurated India's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term. This early announcement underscores India's strategic intent to secure a crucial position on the world's premier body for maintaining international peace and security.

The elections for this coveted two-year term are slated for June next year. India will be competing with Tajikistan for the single available seat within the Asia-Pacific Group. India has previously served as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on eight occasions, with its most recent tenure concluding in December 2022.

During his address, Minister Jaishankar highlighted India's consistent commitment to multilateralism and its readiness to contribute constructively to global discourse. India aims to leverage its experience and unique perspective as a voice for the Global South, addressing pressing international issues such as counter-terrorism, climate action, sustainable development, and maritime security.

Securing a non-permanent seat on the UNSC offers India a significant platform to influence global policy, advocate for reforms within the UN system, and further strengthen its strategic partnerships. It reinforces the nation's growing stature as a responsible global power and its aspirations for a permanent seat on an expanded Security Council.

The campaign launch signals India's proactive diplomacy and its determination to play a pivotal role in shaping a more equitable and secure world order, reflecting its foundational principle of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' – the world is one family.
