Kishan Reddy Calls for Self-Reliance in EV Manufacturing and Critical Minerals
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy stressed the need for India to boost indigenous manufacturing in the EV sector and achieve self-sufficiency in critical minerals for economic growth.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has underscored India's urgent need to bolster indigenous manufacturing capabilities within the electric vehicle (EV) sector and achieve self-sufficiency in critical minerals. Speaking at a recent event, the Minister emphasised that these twin objectives are paramount for India's economic growth, energy security, and strategic autonomy in the evolving global landscape.
The push for local EV manufacturing aligns with the government's broader 'Make in India' initiative, aiming to create a robust domestic ecosystem for electric vehicles. This strategy is expected to not only generate substantial employment opportunities and foster technological innovation but also reduce the nation's reliance on imported components and finished goods. Developing a strong local supply chain is seen as crucial for making EVs more affordable and accessible to Indian consumers.
Parallel to this, Minister Reddy highlighted the critical importance of securing a stable supply of key minerals essential for EV battery production and other high-tech industries. Minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements are vital components, and India's current dependence on imports for many of these poses a significant vulnerability. Achieving self-sufficiency in these minerals involves exploring domestic reserves, investing in advanced extraction technologies, and forging strategic international partnerships.
These initiatives are integral to India's vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India), especially in sectors crucial for future economic and industrial development. By prioritising domestic production in the EV space and securing critical mineral supplies, India aims to position itself as a global leader in green mobility and advanced manufacturing, while simultaneously strengthening its national security and economic resilience against global supply chain disruptions.
