NMC Flags Resident Doctors' Mental Health Crisis to Supreme Court Amidst Long Hours
India's National Medical Commission (NMC) has brought to the attention of the Supreme Court the significant psychological distress experienced by resident doctors across the country. The commission acknowledged that the demanding and often prolonged working hours are taking a severe toll on the mental well-being of these medical professionals, a critical concern for the nation's healthcare system.
The NMC's submission highlighted that such strenuous schedules contribute to high levels of stress, burnout, and various mental health issues among young doctors. Medical associations have repeatedly pointed to the severe consequences, including tragic instances of suicide, which they attribute directly to the relentless work environment and lack of adequate support systems within hospitals.
While recognising the imperative for reasonable working hours to safeguard both the doctors' health and ensure optimal patient care, the NMC conveyed its limitations in enforcing such regulations directly. The commission clarified that the implementation and oversight of working conditions primarily fall under the purview of state health authorities and the administrations of individual medical institutions and hospitals.
This stance by the NMC underscores a systemic challenge within the Indian medical education and healthcare framework. Doctors' groups continue to advocate for urgent reforms, calling for concrete policy changes and stricter adherence to guidelines that can alleviate the burden on resident doctors, thereby fostering a healthier and more sustainable environment for the medical fraternity.
